background

Gears are wheels with teeth that fit together.  When one gear is turned, the other turns too.  If the gears are different sizes, they can

be used to increase the power of a turning force.

The smaller wheel turns more quickly but has less force.

The bigger wheel turns more slowly but has greater force.

Cars and bikes use gears to achieve speeds the human body cannot.
