Gears on a bike are connected by a chain but they work in the same way as gears that touch. The chain transfers the turning force from the pedals to make the wheels go around. When the wheels go around the bike moves forward.
The chain can be moved between gears of different sizes, either to make the bike move faster or to increase the force that will help the bike get up steep slopes.
